4-Ingredient Durian Smoothie (Sinh To Sau Rieng)
Durian is the king of all fruit in Southeast Asia, so that means Durian smoothies are the king of all smoothies. At least in my book they are! This durian smoothie is incredibly easy to make with just 4 simple ingredients and the best, most refreshing drink you can have on a warm day. Learn all you need to know to make this Vietnamese favorite in this blog post!

Durian. One of the most polarizing fruits from Southeast Asia. You either like it or you hate it. I personally love it. I remember walking through Asian markets with my mom and me begging her to get me one. The durian fruit has a spikey exterior and soft yellow flesh on the interior. It has a strong pungent smell that stinks up the whole house when you crack open the fruit, but the taste is just amazing!!! One of my favorite ways to have durian is in smoothie form. I tested the recipe while at home in LA over Thanksgiving and am so excited to share it with you here!

What is Sinh To Sau Rieng?
“Sinh To” is the Vietnamese word for smoothie and “Sau Rieng” is the Vietnamese word for durian. Let me tell you we love our smoothies in the Vietnamese community, and this is hands down a favorite. It is made with durian, ice, condensed milk, and whole milk, very similar to other Vietnamese smoothies like Sinh To Bo (Vietnamese Avocado Smoothie) and Sinh To Mang Cau. The condensed milk provides the perfect amount of sweetness and works with the milk to balance out the intense flavors of durian. It’s an all around great smoothie.
My connection to durian smoothies
This is hands down my favorite smoothie and is one I order every chance I get. And I honestly don’t get a chance that often because it isn’t served at the majority if not any Vietnamese restaurants in LA. That’s part of the reason I had my mom teach me how to make it at home. I can’t live without this smoothie.
How to make a durian smoothie at home
This durian smoothie recipe is incredibly simple and has only a few ingredients. Durian, ice, condensed milk, and whole milk. I was first going to use sugar to sweeten the durian smoothie, but my mom said that you should use condensed milk instead. I didn’t really ask her why, but mom is always right lol. The resulting smoothie is smooth and slightly sweet. The milk and condensed milk tone down the durian fruit’s taste so it’s easier to consume. The raw fruit can be a tad bit intense for even me.
How much durian should you use in this smoothie?
I had a question in the comments about how much durian you should use. There is actually no set amount. It’s however much you want to use. More durian means a stronger durian flavor and less durian means a lighter durian flavor. For me, the perfect amount is the flesh from around 6 durian fruit or 1 1/2 cup of durian flesh.

I make this with vanilla ice cream too sometimes! Thank you for making the recipe!
Does not taste like a Durian Smoothie. Maybe a better explanation of how much flesh would help. I used one pod, too strong for recipe.
Thank you for the feedback and trying the recipe
How much in weight is 6 flesh?
I updated the recipe. I would use ~1 1/2 cups of durian flesh or about 6 durian seeds with flesh around them, but you can use more or less depending on your tolerance for the strong durian flavor. Thanks for the question.
This sounds delicious and your photography is absolutely wonderful!
Thank you so much Nicole!! ?
