There is nothing like a good hot chocolate, especially during the colder months. It always puts me in the mood for cozier days. I’ve always wanted to make a good matcha version of this drink mostly because I find most of the hot chocolate powders from the store to be too sweet. Matcha powder is inherently bitter which balances out the sweetness from the chocolate. I learned this developing my matcha Vietnamese coffee recipe where the matcha helped balance out the sweetness of the condensed milk. That thesis proved true during testing. I actually think I love matcha hot chocolate more than the classic recipe!

The keys to a smooth matcha hot chocolate

This is honestly one of my easiest recipes with little cooking involved. Just throw everything into a sauce pan and heat until the chocolate melts. A couple things really helped me make the best hot chocolate.

  1. First, I discovered during testing that sifting the matcha powder is THE KEY to a great smooth hot chocolate. Matcha powder tends to clump up, so sifting it breaks that all up and helps it incorporate into the milk.
  2. Secondly, I would highly recommend using a whisk. I tried using a spoon but not all the white chocolate would break down properly and the matcha powder wouldn’t fully dissolve.
  3. Lastly, use high quality matcha for the best flavor and color. This recipe is only 4 ingredients, so every ingredient counts!
